The grand finale of our excursion: exploring the Art Nouveau elegance of Oradea, the historic star fortress, and the relaxing thermal baths of Băile Felix.
As we crossed back into Romania, our final stop brought us to the "City of Art Nouveau": Oradea. It was the perfect conclusion to our Central European journey, a city that beautifully blends heritage, culture, and relaxation.
A Relaxing Start: Băile Felix
Before diving into the city's history, we took a slight detour to Băile Felix. Just a few kilometers from Oradea, this is one of Romania's most famous thermal resorts. Soaking in the warm, mineral-rich waters was exactly what we needed to recharge our batteries. The kids loved the huge pools, and we all appreciated the therapeutic calm of the hot springs.
The Star of the West: Oradea Fortress
Our first destination within the city was the Oradea Fortress (Cetatea Oradea). This massive pentagonal bastion fortress is a star-shaped masterpiece that has stood for nearly a millennium. We wandered through its courtyards and learned about its strategic importance as a cultural and military hub in Transylvania. Its unique shape and the sheer scale of the walls make it an impressive sight.
Elegance in the Center: Piața Unirii
The heart of Oradea beats in Unirii Square (Piața Unirii). We were immediately struck by the stunning architectural ensemble, featuring colorful Art Nouveau buildings like the Black Eagle Palace with its beautiful stained-glass passage.
Standing tall in the square, we admired the majestic equestrian statues of Mihai Viteazul and King Ferdinand I, powerful symbols of the city's Romanian identity and heritage. A slow walk through the center, with its wide pedestrian areas and beautifully restored facades, felt like a journey back to the Belle Époque.
Oradea was a revelation—a city of light, water, and timeless elegance, and a fitting end to our grand family adventure through the heart of Europe.
