May Day mini vacation at Ranca: the Trovanti Museum, Polovraci Cave in the Oltet Gorges, and relaxation at over 1,700m altitude on the Transalpina road.

For the May Day holiday, we chose to escape the city buzz and take refuge at over 1,700 meters altitude in the Ranca resort, along the legendary Transalpina road. These were days full of discoveries, wild nature, barbecue, good cheer, and a mountain adventure that tested our limits.

The Trovanti Museum: When Nature Becomes a Sculptor

Our first stop was the Trovanti Museum, a place that leaves you speechless. Trovanti are mysterious stones that seem to "grow" and multiply, shaped by nature over millions of years. We saw how nature sculpts the rocks and gives them extraordinary forms — from near-perfect spheres to bizarre organic shapes that look as if they were carved by an artist's hand. It is a place where geology becomes art and every stone tells a story millions of years old.

Polovraci Cave: Ancient Energies in the Oltet Gorges

The second stop was Polovraci Cave, hidden within the grand Oltet Gorges. Entering the cave transports you to another world — the cold air, the absolute silence, and the stalactite and stalagmite formations create a mystical atmosphere. We truly felt the ancient energies of this place, a deep connection with the earth that makes you completely forget about the outside world. It is an experience that takes you back in time and fills you with respect for the forces of nature.

May Day at Ranca: Barbecue, Good Cheer & Crocuses at 1,700m

The days spent at Ranca, at Pensiunea Transalpina (Transalpina Guesthouse), were exactly what we needed. Traditional barbecue, clean mountain air, children running through meadows sprinkled with purple crocuses, and a May Day atmosphere like no other. At this altitude, spring is just arriving — the pastures were covered with crocuses and mountain wildflowers, creating a natural carpet of rare beauty.

The Attempt to Summit Vârful Păpușa

The adventure highlight was our attempt to conquer Vârful Păpușa (Păpușa Peak, 2,391m). We set off full of enthusiasm on the marked trail, climbing steadily through spectacular alpine landscapes. Unfortunately, when we were almost reaching the summit, strong winds forced us to turn back. It was a tough but wise decision — the mountain taught us once again that nature commands and decides when you are welcome on its ridges. It remains a challenge for next time!

Ranca on May Day was the perfect mini vacation — a blend of culture, nature, adventure, and relaxation at altitude, exactly the recipe we needed to recharge our batteries.
