Canal d'Amour and Afionas: Jewels of the Northwest Coast

A journey along the island’s northwest coast: from the flower-filled streets of Afionas, to drives through olive groves and adventures in the caves of Canal d’Amour.

Exploring the northwest coast of Corfu took us through places that seem plucked from postcards, offering a perfect mix of tradition, dramatic landscapes, and adventure.

The Magic of Afionas

We started the day in Afionas, one of the oldest and best-preserved villages on the island. Perched on a promontory, the village captivates you with its extremely narrow streets, whitewashed houses, and the explosion of colors from the bougainvillea flowers hanging from every balcony.

A mandatory stop was at a local tavern, where we savored traditional Greek dishes. The taste of the local olive oil and the freshness of the ingredients reminded us why Hellenic cuisine is so beloved worldwide. The meal was accompanied by a spectacular view of Agios Georgios Bay, a living painting that we admired in silence.

Driving Through Ancient Olive Groves

Leaving Afionas, the road to Sidari took us through a landscape dominated by giant olive groves, some of them hundreds of years old. Their gnarled trunks and silver crowns create a natural tunnel of restful green, making driving a relaxing and beautiful experience.

Sidari and the Legendary Canal d'Amour

Arriving in Sidari, we were greeted by one of the most unusual geological formations in Europe: Canal d'Amour. The sandstone rocks sculpted by the wind and sea have created natural channels, small bays, and fascinating caves.

Legend has it that lovers who swim through the canal will stay together forever, and those who are single will find the love of their life. Beyond the legend, the main fun was exploring the caves. We swam through natural water tunnels and discovered small caverns where sunlight penetrates, creating magical reflections in the turquoise water. It is a place full of energy, where adventure and romance meet on the shores of the Ionian Sea.

Corfu continues to surprise us with its diversity, proving that every part of the island has a unique personality and its own special magic.
