A journey to the "Castle of Angels" and the turquoise bays of Paleokastritsa: where Byzantine history watches over the most beautiful seascapes.
Exploring the west coast of Corfu took us to one of the most dramatic and spectacular viewpoints on the entire island: the Byzantine fortress of Angelokastro.
Angelokastro: The Castle Among the Clouds
Also known as the Byzantine Castello di Angelokastro (Castle of Angels), this historical monument is strategically located on a rocky promontory, at a considerable height above sea level. The climb to its walls requires some effort, but the reward is a breathtaking view that simply took our breath away. From here, you can admire the entire northwest coast, the bays of Paleokastritsa, and the infinite blue of the Ionian Sea. It is a place where you truly feel the force of Byzantine history, the fortress once being a vital defense point against invasions.
Relaxation at Paleokastritsa
After descending from the castle, we headed to the base of the hill, to the famous resort of Paleokastritsa. Considered one of the most beautiful villages in Greece, the place is blessed with six small bays, each with its unreal turquoise water.
We spent the rest of the day on the beach, exploring small sea caves and enjoying the freshness of the water. The combination of steep cliffs, lush green vegetation, and the crystalline sea transforms Paleokastritsa into a truly magical place that you never want to leave.
The days spent on the west coast reminded us that the island of Corfu is a multi-faceted gem, where every road leads to a new and fascinating discovery.
