A day dedicated to imperial elegance at the Achilleion Palace and local traditions at Mavroudis Olive Oil: where history meets the authentic taste of Greece.
Our last day of exploration in Corfu was a fascinating blend of royal elegance and agricultural traditions that define the spirit of this island.
Imperial Elegance at the Achilleion Palace
We started the day at the Achilleion Palace, the former summer residence of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, the famous Sisi. The palace is an architectural masterpiece, but the real magic lies in its terraced gardens. The centerpiece, which impressed us the most, is the imposing statue of Achilles Triumphant, looking proudly towards the sea. The contrast between the white marble, the green gardens, and the infinite blue of the Ionian Sea creates a setting of overwhelming beauty. We explored every corner, from the opulent interiors to the statues of the muses, feeling the Empress's passion for Greek culture at every step.
Mavroudis Olive Oil: A Sensory Experience
After visiting the palace, we headed towards a more down-to-earth, yet equally fascinating place: Mavroudis Olive Oil. This is a family business with a long tradition, where we were welcomed with warm hospitality. We visited their museum, which displays old olive oil presses, learning about the complex extraction process that has remained almost unchanged for centuries.
The long-awaited moment was the tasting. We tried various types, from classic extra virgin olive oil to those infused with lemon or oregano. The taste was so intense and pure that we couldn't resist: we stocked up significantly for the entire next year. We are heading home with several bottles of "liquid gold" that will remind us, at every meal, of the sun and flavors of Corfu.
Corfu offered us a complete experience—from adventure and fun to history and refined tastes. An island that will surely call us back.
