Schönbrunn Zoo and Palace: From the World’s Oldest Zoo to Imperial Gardens

A magical day at Tiergarten Schönbrunn, the oldest zoo in the world, meeting polar bears and wandering through imperial gardens.

Our trip through the imperial capital continued with a destination that both kids and adults were eagerly anticipating: Schönbrunn. It's a place where history meets nature in the most spectacular way.

The Oldest Zoo in the World

Did you know that Vienna is home to the oldest zoo in the world? Tiergarten Schönbrunn was founded in 1752 by Emperor Franz I Stephan. Walking through its historic pavilions, you can really feel that royal heritage, but the care and modern exhibits make it a world-class experience for animals and visitors alike.

A Special Meeting: The Polar Bears

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly our visit to Franz Josef Land, the polar bear habitat. The children were absolutely mesmerized watching these magnificent Arctic giants.

Seeing a polar bear up close (and even underwater through the glass panels!) brought so much joy to the little ones. It was a moment of pure fascination and a great opportunity to talk about these amazing animals and the importance of protecting their natural environment.

Gardens and Grandeur: Schönbrunn Palace

After the zoo, we didn't have to go far to continue our adventure. We stepped out into the vast Schönbrunn Palace Gardens. Strolling through the perfectly manicured paths, past the Neptune Fountain, and towards the Gloriette hill was the perfect way to soak in the afternoon sun.

We finished our visit with a tour of the Schönbrunn Palace itself. Its golden facade and hundreds of rooms are living testaments to the era of Maria Theresa. It was a day filled with wonder, from the wild heart of the zoo to the refined elegance of imperial life.
