A three-day spring road trip from Mangalia to Topola, Bulgaria: seaside flavors, Kaliakra cliffs, Queen Maria’s castle in Balchik, and Roman heritage at Adamclisi.

Our three-day spring road trip began in Bucharest and took us along the Romanian coast into neighboring Bulgaria — a quiet escape rather than a busy resort.

From Bucharest, via Mangalia

We set off from Bucharest and made our first stop in Mangalia. There we walked along the seaside promenade, discovered a small mosque tucked near the harbor, and had a quick local snack — stoceag — before continuing toward the border.

Cap Kaliakra: Cliffs, Ruins and Wild Sea

We spent ample time at Cap Kaliakra, walking the headland path that traces the dramatic cliffs. The promontory is marked by fortress ruins and a small lighthouse; from every viewpoint the sea stretches to the horizon and seabirds carve the wind. The combination of raw geology, open views and the ruins’ silhouette makes Kaliakra feel elemental and unforgettable.

Topola: Forest Walks to the Beach

We stayed at Topola Skies, so our time there was not spent wandering village streets but on a peaceful walk through the pine forest that opens onto a secluded stretch of beach. The trail through the trees and the soft, late-spring light made for an easy, restorative afternoon.

Balchik: Queen Maria’s Castle and the Magical Gardens

One of the trip's highlights was a visit to Balchik, where the palace and terraced gardens of Queen Maria unfold toward the sea. The outdoor spaces — with cacti, palms, and ornamental pools — are especially charming and perfect for slow exploration. The enchanting, fragrant rose gardens in full spring bloom complete the spell; every corner of the terraces feels plucked from a storybook.

Adamclisi: Roman history on the way home

On the return we stopped at Adamclisi in Romania to visit the Tropaeum Traiani monument and the archaeological park. The museum and the ruins are a quiet, fitting way to close the trip and reconnect with the region’s deeper history.

This short escape — from Bucharest to the coast and back — left us with simple memories: promenades and mosque discoveries in Mangalia, the raw drama of Kaliakra, a restful forest-to-beach walk at Topola Skies, the poetic gardens of Balchik and the ancient stones of Adamclisi.
